Gallery and Art Centre Opening In Windsor

Windsor, Nova Scotia - October 22, 2008 - “Creativity,” says Catherine Jamieson, Executive Director of the Utata Gallery and Art Centre, “is the most important human resource we have.”

As schools drop art and music classes from their curriculum and more and more people opt to communicate and socialize online, our traditional forms of creative education and expression are becoming endangered, if not extinct. "The community suffers," says Jamieson, "when young people are not encouraged to explore their creativity and older people have no outlet to socialize in a creative environment."

Part social club, part art gallery and part art school, Utata's not-for-profit philosophy aims itself squarely at the problem. Its beautifully renovated location on Windsor's waterfront features a gallery highlighting Nova Scotia artists with a particular emphasis on those working in the Annapolis Valley region, over a hundred classes in a wide range of categories from fine art to belly dancing and a series of regular artistic, creative and social activities and events aimed at gathering the community together.

Ms. Jamieson says that Utata is meant to be more than a gallery or an art school. "We're very tribal in nature. We see ourselves as facilitators. If the community wants tap dancing, we'll give the community tap dancing. We're here to open doors to creativity - in whatever form it takes."

Boasting a staff of well seasoned and well respected instructors, a very diverse class schedule, a salon-like evening program, internships, scholarships and membership packages, Utata is Jamieson's "big dream." A former business executive and award winning photographer, she has authored two photography books and built a large-scale community website which has over 15,000 members. "Utata is all about the notion that creativity is the most important catalyst to positive social evolution. Art is one result of creativity," she says, "but everyone who wants to excel at their job or in their personal relationships needs it, too. The very serious problems in this world need very creative solutions."

Classes start November 3, 2008 and the Gallery opens November 1, 2008 with an Open House from 10AM until 5PM. Memberships and class registrations are immediately available online at http://gallery.utata.org/, by going to 40 Water Street in downtown Windsor any day from 10AM until 5PM or by calling (902)792-2710.
